"Jews of Galicia: A History." Lesson One

"Polish Partition and the Birth of Galicia"

This first lesson will introduce the East European era in Jewish history and its lasting importance. It’ll discuss the partitions of Poland in 1772 – their causes and results – and particularly the creation of Galicia, the name given by Austria to its conquered portion. It will then spend quite a bit of time examining the impact of Viennese rule – particularly by Maria Theresa and Joseph II – on Galicia as a whole, and on its Jews in particular
